Brief

We use language to communicate, to think and to solve problems. Language is one of the features that define us as a species and makes us distinctive from other animals. However, these claims evoke many questions—What exactly is “language”? What do you know when you know a language? What are some of the properties of language that are common to all human languages? We all experience difficulties in learning a second language, but how do children acquire their native language without being formally taught? This course provides an overview of linguistics, the scientific study of human language. We will study the ‘design features’ of language, and introduce specific techniques to analyze language. Unlike language courses that you might have taken, we will not focus on any specific language. Instead, our goal is to understand the general principles that underline human languages.
